<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Yesterday children's authors and illustrators, aspiring and established, converged on The St Bride's Foundation, London for the first Nosy Crow Conference entitled </div>
<h4>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><b>"Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Children's Publishing </b></span></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><b>(But Were Afraid To Ask.)</b></span></h4>
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px; font-weight: normal;">Nosy Crow is the exciting independent children's publisher established in 2010 by Kate Wilson and Camilla Reid. In its short life to date, Nosy Crow have already published a host of beautiful children's books, several ground breaking apps (they are very hot on new technology) and have been voted IPG Children's Publisher of the Year two years running. That's quite a start.</span></h4>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Nosy Crow are keen to support emerging talent and I believe this must be the motivation behind this incredibly comprehensive and ambitious conference.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
After a brief introduction by Kate Wilson, Guardian columnist Lucy Mangan explained why children's literature has always been so important to her. She said that she did not know what he would have done without books in her childhood; books bought by her parents and loaned by school and public libraries. Books gave the young Lucy freedom and and a means of escape. She spoke of the inherent desire in all of us for stories.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
This theme was picked up later by brilliant children's author, Tracy Corderoy. Her childhood in Wales was not full of books, but her passion for stories was enormous, nonetheless. She described the world in which she grew up as rather grey; her notorious Comprehensive school was overshadowed by the one of towns principal employers, an enormous chemical works. Tracy recalled vividly a stage production she saw as a young child, in which people in red hoods danced to 'Walking In A Winter Wonderland'. This dazzling splash of colour and glamour clearly left a strong impression on Tracy and is one of the reasons she believes that live author events are so important for children. They bring colour and excitement into children's lives.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Live events are also essential for authors and illustrators. Tracy spoke warmly and encouragingly about forcing ourselves to step out of our comfort zones, leave the safety and security of our offices and studios and actually get in touch with our audience, the children. She offered practical advice on preparation for events which I found very helpful. Drawing on personal anecdotes, she was self-efacing, charming and very funny without a hint of egotism or </div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
self-promotion. I got the impression that Tracy is still very much in touch with her inner child and has enormous and genuine affection for her audience. </div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Nosy Crow's editors, Camilla Reid, Louise Bolongaro and Kirsty Stansfield spoke in turn about their individual roles, areas of expertise and what they look for in a submission. It was pointed out that as well as a desire to create beautiful books, Nosy Crow is ultimately a commercial enterprise, with a need to sell books and make money. This was a useful reminder, in case we become too romantic about our motivation as authors and illustrators. We do all need to live and eat.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
However, a real love for their work was obvious in all three and a desire to help author and illustrator create the very best possible book.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Agent Hilary Delamare spoke brilliantly about the role of agent, dispelling suspicions of exploitative parasites and explaining that securing a contact is only the first step in a ongoing process. The relationship between agent and client should be a close one and I know from my own experience that the support and advice of a good one can be career changing.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Debut authors Paula Harrison, Helen Peters and Sue Ransom described their individual journeys to publication with Nosy Crow. All their experiences were different, unexpected and ultimately encouraging for as-yet unpublished audience members.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
John Reed of Publishing Talks gave a head-spinning introduction to building your own brand through social networking and blogging. He managed to convey a great deal of useful information and ideas in a short time.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
For me, one of the highlights of the day was an appearance from Melissa Cox, Waterstone's Children's New Titles Buyer.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Melissa gave an illuminating insight into what makes a book stand out on the shop floor. Her love for children's books was very apparent, as was her desire to give every book she sells the opportunity to shine. She described what draws her attention to a book or author and gave some great examples of what does and doesn't work. Melissa also acknowledged that book selling is not an exact science, and that expected successes can flop just as easily as outsiders can become best sellers.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; min-height: 14px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
The day was really interesting and informative and I am sure that everybody will have learned a great deal, regardless of the amount of experience they have in the publishing industry. I know that I did. As Dr Seuss said</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; min-height: 14px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #131313; font-family: Helvetica; font: normal normal normal 14px/normal Georgia; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” </div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; min-height: 14px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Helvetica; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
So, thank you, Nosy Crow. You are clearly going places. I look forward to your next conference.</div>

<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">What if the football hadn’t gone over the wall. On the other side of the
wall there is a dark secret. And the devil. And the Moon Man. And the
Motherland doesn’t want anyone to know. But Standish Treadwell — who has
different-coloured eyes, who <i>can’t read, can’t write, Standish Treadwell isn’t bright</i>
— sees things differently than the rest of the "train-track thinkers."
So when Standish and his only friend and neighbour, Hector, make their
way to the other side of the wall, they see what the Motherland has been
hiding. And it’s big...One hundred very short chapters, told in an
utterly original first-person voice, propel readers through a narrative
that is by turns gripping and darkly humorous, bleak and chilling,
tender and transporting.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />Mr Big is strong, Mr Big is tough, Mr Big is ...well ...big! He has just
one small problem - because of the way he looks he just can't get
people to stick around. How can he show them that although he may look a
little scary, he is just a great big softy inside? With his trademark
bold colour and masterful graphic simplicity, Ed Vere sensitively and
humorously tackles the universal and current subject of inclusion,
reminding the reader that to get to know someone you need to look beyond
their exterior. This is the third picture book from an exciting new
talent, whose previous titles "The Getaway" and "Banana" have received
great critical acclaim.</span><br />

I was invited by <b>Katherine Lodge</b>, fantastic illustrator of the <b>Let's Find Mimi </b>series (Hodder) and thoroughly lovely person. See more on her website<a href="http://www.seriouslycute.com/"><span style="color: #0053b1; text-decoration: underline;">http://www.seriouslycute.com</span></a></div>

<b>What is the title of your next book?</b></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
"Cinderelephant" in paperback.</div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 14.0px;">

<b>What is a one-sentence synopsis of your book?</b></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
It's a retelling of the traditional fairytale, starring a lonely elephant and a very BIG shoe.</div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; min-height: 14.0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<b>Where did the idea for the book come from?</b></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
I took my children to see choreographer Matthew Bourne's "Cinderella" at Sadler's Wells. To be honest, the show was rather too sophisticated for young children but the poster</div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
featured a photograph of a surprising un-dainty shoe. I thought how great it would be if Cinderella's shoe was too big to fit on anybody else's foot and then, in a flash of inspiration, the name "Cinderelephant" came to me.</div>
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
I couldn't really believe that it hadn't been done before. I shared the idea with the fantastic, imaginative people at Templar Publishing and we started work on it almost immediately. It was such a fun book to illustrate!</div>

This time our fearless friends Charlie, and his dog Bandit, find themselves traveling back first to Egypt at the beginning of the 20C and then further back in time to the reign of Hatsepsut, the ancient Egyptian female Pharaoh.<br />
Like the first book in the series,"A Roman Rescue", it has taken a mammoth effort from all involved to complete this book, but it has also been fantastic fun.<br />
Thanks to Kelly and all at Templar Publishing.<br />

This book is called "Me" in the UK and is published by Templar Publishing.<br />
"Me" forms part of a series of 4 foil books for the very young. The other title are "Sometimes", "When" and "You".<br />
Here is a lovely review from Publisher's Weekly for the American edition. 25/7/11.<br />

The speaker is an engagingly plump and downy young emperor penguin--"The world is fast... and I am small. The ocean is deep... and I am small"--who finishes by addressing the larger emperor penguin on whose feet it nestles: "I may be small, but I can see/ the biggest thing to you... is me!" While Dodd's artwork for older readers is often tongue-in-cheek, these spreads have a serious, almost stately quality. A striking underwater view shows the trails of bubbles left behind by diving penguins, the water's blue darkening to indicate chilly depths; a steep, foil-embossed slope is a mountain down which the penguin chick slides, snow flying off into a somber, slate-gray sky; and an adult penguin cuddles the chick, touching its beak as a crescent moon is reflected in an icy pool. It's a reminder that Dodd isn't all clever British cheek; she's a fine graphic artist as well. Up to age 3. I have been thinking about the differences between graduating in the early 1990's and now.<br />
<br />
We have just been through a very tough recession as we had back in 1992. When I started at Central Saint Martin's in 1988 there were long lists of jobs for graduates on the head-of-department's door. By 1992 that list had dwindled to virtually nothing.<br />
<br />
My first commission upon leaving came from "Guide Patrol Magazine" and paid the princely sum of £60. I was so pleased to get this work, as it represented the second piece of published work in my portfolio.<br />
As soon as graduated I began the exhausting process of making appointments and taking my portfolio around to magazines, newspapers, advertising agencies and anybody else who would see me. I tried to make 10 appointments a week. I listened very carefully to and advice received from the people I saw, and tried to apply it intelligently. I even went to New York and visited companies over there.<br />
<br />
When I look back at my 22 year old self, I admire her guts!<br />
<br />
Gradually the commissions started building, but this didn't happen over night. I took on a shared studio and finally had the great luck of finding my fabulous agent, Eunice McMullen. It was at that point that things really began to take off for me.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh3jLwyqmdJNgoZIeiG55hFjmC7PfIvqVcvUEsngT5jqRTQrMEQaN9Y34jnkPtbX6Kc6ilSaJ7m7rBF-nzUzxrFRJqXoF0W57OMqwm03ZJoLV5NWyIIs_XFAE-Yjl_pLI9KJrW7KjTuECH/s1600/me+tif.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="275" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh3jLwyqmdJNgoZIeiG55hFjmC7PfIvqVcvUEsngT5jqRTQrMEQaN9Y34jnkPtbX6Kc6ilSaJ7m7rBF-nzUzxrFRJqXoF0W57OMqwm03ZJoLV5NWyIIs_XFAE-Yjl_pLI9KJrW7KjTuECH/s320/me+tif.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Today's graduates are so much more media savvy. They use blogs, websites and all that the internet has to offer. This is fantastic, but if I had advice for newly qualified illustrators, it would be do not expect the world to come to you; to keep knocking on the door; listen carefully to advice from people who you respect and finally, do not take no for an answer.Emma Doddhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17063800721521409219noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3216266844103405574.post-81220920364787486752011-06-30T11:14:00.000-07:002011-06-30T11:14:54.825-07:00A Roman RescueWell, it seems "A Roman Rescue" (Templar Publishing) is reprinting after only 4 months which is great news!<br />
The first in this series of graphic novels for 7-10 year olds by Kelly Gerrard, has also been chosen for the Summer Reading Challenge.<br />

They review very few children's books, so I gather this is a bit of a coup!<br />

How would I illustrate Daddy being "kind" <i>and <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;">"funny"? </span></i><br />
<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;">After wrestling with this problem for some time, the answer came to me in the middle of the night.</span></i><br />

The predictability is easily compensated for by the remarkable emotional intensity of Emma Dodd's bold illustrations, as they capture shared moments of pleasure between a baby and father as they romp and tease and finally end the day with a cosy bedtime story and snuggle. Giles Andreae's rhyming text provides a pleasingly bouncy accompaniment.</div></div></div></div>Emma Doddhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17063800721521409219noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3216266844103405574.post-6475459242197525632011-06-17T11:23:00.000-07:002011-06-17T11:23:27.596-07:00Lovely review from "Bookworms" in the US<h1 class="post-title" style="border-bottom-width: 0px; border-color: initial; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-top-width: 0px; color: #555555; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-weight: bold; font: normal normal normal 1.5em/normal Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 5px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;"><a class="active" href="http://hamptonroads.com/2011/05/easy-does-it" style="border-bottom-width: 0px; border-color: initial; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-top-width: 0px; color: #0072ac; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; text-decoration: none;">Easy does it ...</a></h1><div style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 0.87em; line-height: 1.3em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 10px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">It's not easy. But it needs to look that way.</div><div style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 0.87em; line-height: 1.3em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 10px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">That’s one of the cardinal rules of creating picture books. The words are often simple, and the pictures frequently have a loose, casual flow. Like a teenager laboring for an hour in front of the bathroom to make his hair look just untidy enough, writers and illustrators hide a lot of effort under a picture book’s easygoing veneer.</div><div style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 0.87em; line-height: 1.3em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 10px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">Two masters of the deceptively simple picture book have new work out this spring: author-illustrators Emma Dodd and Patrick McDonnell (perhaps best known as the cartoonist who created “Mutts”).</div><div style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 0.87em; line-height: 1.3em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 10px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">From McDonnell comes “Me … Jane” one of the year’s best non-fiction picture books, an illustrated biography that depicts primatologist Jane Goodall’s childhood (ages 3-6, Little, Brown, $15.99). McDonnell’s spare style and expressive faces are paired with some of Goodall’s own drawings, as well as a subtly colored collection of vintage scientific drawings. The story is straightforward and humorous, an inspiring look at a girl who defied expectations about proper careers for young ladies. The book wraps up with a short biography and a note from Goodall herself, encouraging young readers to tackle the world with the same gusto she’s shown.</div><div style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 0.87em; line-height: 1.3em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 10px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">“Meow Said the Cow,” Dodd’s tale in verse about farm animals suffering a bit of an identity crisis, is just as effortless – but entirely different in focus (ages 3-6, Arthur A. Levine Books, $16.99).</div><div style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 0.87em; line-height: 1.3em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 10px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">With poetry that strolls along at an pleasant pace, it tells the story of a sleepy-head cat whose magic spell aims to quiet the rooster’s crowing. “He puffed out his chest and opened his beak/and out came the tiniest, ‘squeak, squeak, squeak!’ ”</div><div style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 0.87em; line-height: 1.3em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 10px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">Of course, if the rooster now has the mouse’s voice, there’s no telling what other sort of mayhem is in store, and Dodd uses sunrise-bright illustrations to highlight the silliness of the situation – and the predicament cat finds himself in. It’s easy to read, easy to laugh at – and easy to love.<br />

The brief was to illustrate an article to be published in the newspaper the next day. The winner would not know until they saw their illustration in the paper. So when I saw somebody reading the paper on the tube that morning and realised that the it was my illustration that had been printed, I can still remember the thrill!<br />
I just resisted the urge to nudge the man next to me and say "I did that!"<br />
